Philly PHLASH Starting Another Season;
Route Expanded, Stops Added

(April 30, 2009) – The PHLASH trolley loop is coming back for another season and thanks to SEPTA, it will have a new expanded route. Starting May 1, the friendly purple trolleys will be stopping at 27 points from Penn’s Landing to the Centennial District in Fairmount Park with several new locations added, making it even easier for visitors and residents to see all of Center City’s top attractions and hotels. New stops for 2009 include the National Constitution Center, Franklin Square, and the African American Museum, as well as the Philadelphia Zoo and Please Touch Museum in the Centennial District.

The fare is only $2 dollars each time you board. Individual all-day passes are $5 and all-day family passes for two adults and two children 6-17 years old are $10. Children under five ride free and seniors ride free at all times.

Tickets can be purchased at the City Hall Visitor Center, the Independence Visitor Center, located at 6th and Market Streets, the RiverLink Ferry at Penn's Landing or aboard the trolley.

To make the service even more accessible to everyone in the region, SEPTA’s new One Day Independence Passes ($10) and One Day Family Independence Passes ($25) and SEPTA TransPasses and TrailPasses can also be used for an unlimited number of trips on the PHLASH trolleys, as well as on subways, buses, trolleys and trains throughout the region.

PHLASH will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week through October 31, with service every 12 minutes. PHLASH also offers direct connections to all SEPTA and PATCO rail lines and discounted Park & Ride parking at select locations.

“This is not only a great service for visitors to Philadelphia, but also for the city’s residents,” said Paul R. Levy, President and CEO of the Center City District, which organizes the program. “Tying these great attractions and historic sites together in one simple, affordable transit loop serves to enhance the Philadelphia experience.”

In describing this new partnership, SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey said “PHLASH and the SEPTA Independence Pass offer a tremendous travel value for local and out of town visitors. It gives individuals and families the chance to enjoy world class historic sites, museums, shopping, dining, and entertainment, all with one convenient pass.”

The PHLASH is great example of civic partnership. It is funded by grants from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration through PennDOT and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission. It is managed by the Central Philadelphia Transportation Management Association, a subsidiary of the Center City District, who contracts with Philadelphia Trolley Works to provide the service. It is promoted by the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, Where Philadelphia and VisitPA.com. With SEPTA now joining the partnership, the service is being expanded.

Central Philadelphia Transportation Management Association (CPTMA) is a non-profit organization seeking to enhance Center City Philadelphia as a premier place to live, work, study and visit by improving mobility throughout the downtown. Working with public- and private-sector partners, CPTMA helps reduce traffic congestion, promotes the use of public transit, improves opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists and serves as an information resource on transportation issues affecting Center City.
