Get Informed and In Shape at Dilworth Park

Spring Training Program, presented by Rothman Institute

PHILADELPHIA (April 5, 2016) – On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, starting this week, and continuing through May 26*, Dilworth Park is hosting a variety of free sports and fitness programs, conducted by experts in the field of personal fitness, thanks to the generous support of the Rothman Institute and Jefferson Health.

All of the events outlined below will take place outdoors at Dilworth Park. Now in its second year, Spring Training at Dilworth Park, programed by Optimal Sport Health Clubs, provides a convenient opportunity to get healthy at lunchtime or after work.

Tuesdays, April 5, 12, 19 and 26, at 6:00 p.m., Push the physical limits of your body with a high-intensity approach to fitness during a Boot Camp-style workout. Erik Strassman of Optimal Sport Health Clubs believes “something starts with having at least one goal.”

Then on Tuesdays, May 10, 17 and 24 at 6:00 p.m., CKO Kickboxing of 1616 Walnut Street hosts one-hour classes geared to allow each participant to work at their own pace. Classes limited to the first 72 people and are led by Gabe Perez, the head kickboxing trainer and a martial-arts practitioner and competitor since age 6.

Every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. City Fit Girls Running Club meets at Dilworth Park for a weekly three-mile trek beneath the city skyline.

Yoga will take place on the Albert M. Greenfield Lawn at Dilworth Park on Thursdays at 12 Noon. Everyone should bring his or her own mat. These sessions, led by Optimal Sport Health Clubs, will take place on April 7, 14, 21, 28, May 12, 19, and 26.

Instructor David Hem, a graduate of Dhyana Yoga, believes yoga can be a life changer: “Yoga can help someone through the toughest obstacles and continue to bring participants to a place of clarity and personal truth.”

On Thursdays April  7, 14, 21 and 28 and May 12, 19 and 26 at 6:00 p.m., the proven calorie-burning program Zumba will feature Latin-style music and will be hosted by Dwayne Townsend, one of today's leading experts in both dance and fitness. Dwayne teaches weekly fitness classes both privately and at Optimal Sport Health Clubs.

As part of Spring Training at Dilworth Park, the free global event, World Tai Chi/QiGong Day, will take place on April 30, 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., at the park. Master Jingshan Tang and his students from the Oriental Fitness Institute will lead workshops and demonstrations in QiGong and several Tai Chi styles.  

Since 1999, World Tai Chi/QiGong Day events have been held annually in over 100 cities in more than 80 nations on the last Saturday of April. Thousands of people around the world gather to practice and celebrate the art and health benefits of Tai Chi and QiGong.
